Coaching a pilot before his exam to become a Captain

This week I taught a senior pilot of a large airline a set of reset techniques as he geared up for the most important exam of his career for a major airline.

Paul is a highly experienced and confident senior pilot.

I found it fascinating to hear how moving inches across from the right seat into the left seat totally alters the runway perspective

A new captain needs to adapt to their new left seat without steering slightly to the right, due to previously sitting on that side.

Subtle shifts in perspective

As we talked about this slight shift in his visual perspectives from the cockpit, we both noted that this is a perfect metaphor for the huge impact a slight change in our emotional perspectives can have.

The techniques that I teach in the Permissioning toolkit are entirely focused on creating enough space for new perspectives to arise. We tend to view situations in a habitual way, even if we consider ourselves to be open-minded.

Anxiety and stress get perpetuated when we are locked into a repetitive way of thinking. Repeated emotional responses will be reflected in how we feel physically too.

Having techniques to create big enough gaps in our thinking gives us the freedom to choose a new response, gain insights and increase clarity.

Creating enough mental space for an entirely new perspective on a challenge is a very potent way to approach any situation in our lives. It is within this space that we can find pretty much everything we are looking for at that moment.
